Top 5 Tips for Building an Art Gallery Wall

Creating an art gallery wall is a wonderful way to bring personality and style into your home. Whether you’re an art lover with a growing collection or just starting out, a thoughtfully arranged gallery wall can elevate any room. But where do you begin? Don’t worry — we’re here to guide you through the process. These five tips will help you design a stunning display that feels cohesive, balanced, and uniquely yours.

    1. Choose a Theme or Color Palette

Every beautiful gallery wall starts with a clear direction. A theme or cohesive color palette sets the tone and ensures your collection feels intentional rather than random.

Your theme could revolve around a specific subject, like landscapes, abstract art, or family photography. Alternatively, you might focus on a consistent color scheme, such as monochrome black and white, soft pastels, or bold, vibrant hues. As designer Nate Berkus affirms, "Your home should tell the story of who you are, and be a collection of what you love."

    2. Plan Your Layout Before Hanging

One of the biggest mistakes people make when creating a gallery wall is skipping the planning stage. Hanging art without a plan can lead to a chaotic look—and unnecessary holes in your walls.

Start by laying your pieces out on the floor or a large table. Experiment with different arrangements to determine the most visually pleasing layout. Consider factors like spacing, balance, and flow. Generally, aim for 2-3 inches of space between frames for a clean and organized appearance.

You can also cut out paper templates the same size as your artworks and tape them to the wall. This step will help you visualize how the layout works in the space before making any permanent changes.

    3. Mix and Match Frame Styles and Sizes

Uniformity can sometimes feel rigid or overly formal, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your frame choices. Mixing different styles, sizes, and finishes can add depth and interest to your gallery wall.

Try a mix of modern black frames, rustic wood finishes, and metallic accents can create a dynamic, eclectic look. Just be sure the variety doesn’t overwhelm your theme—stick to 2-3 finishes for a harmonious balance.

As interior designer Kelly Wearstler advises, "Mix high and low, but always mix."³ Variety in your framing adds character and keeps your wall feeling fresh and intriguing.

And remember, variation in size is just as important. Pair large statement pieces with smaller prints to create contrast and draw the eye around the display.

    4. Incorporate Different Types of Art

Your gallery wall doesn’t have to consist solely of prints or photographs. Mixing different types of art can give the wall a layered, multidimensional feel that's both modern and visually exciting.

Mixing art styles such as a black-and-white pencil sketch paired with a bold, colorful abstract print adds visual tension that draws attention. You could also include personal elements like kid’s artwork or memorable keepsakes for a truly unique touch.

“A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy,” says celebrated designer Juan Montoya. Let your wall surprise and delight with every glance.

    5. Use Proper Tools for Flawless Hanging

A flawless art wall doesn’t just rely on great design—it also depends on the execution. Using the right tools and techniques will ensure your pieces are secure, aligned, and damage-free for both the art and your walls.

Basic tools you’ll need include a level, measuring tape, and a hammer. If you’re working with heavier pieces, consider using wall anchors for added stability. Adhesive hooks or picture-hanging strips can be an alternative for lighter frames if you want to avoid nails.

Charles Eames reminds us, "The details are not the details. They make the design." Careful hanging will make your display look polished and elevate your entire space.

Before drilling or hammering, double-check every measurement and mark your wall lightly with a pencil or painter’s tape to indicate where each nail or hook should go.
