Buying art supports artists. Yes, that aforementioned generic print was made sometime, somewhere, by someone with a creative idea, and they were probably compensated for the rights to duplicate their work to the Nth degree. But when you invest in an original work of art, every one of your dollars goes straight to the artist who created the work (and perhaps also the hardworking gallerist who has dedicated his or her career to supporting creatives). Most people say they think art and culture is important; buying art is the surest way to walk the walk and talk the talk.

Selecting a real work of art will challenge you: you’ll consider what you can, and want, to invest your hard-earned dollars in. You’ll look within to discover what content, textures, materials, shapes, and sizes speak to your spirit. And chances are you’ll be choosing that one thing over something else. You’ll be committing.

But… if long-term relationships aren’t your thing, remember that original fine art retains, and often builds, its value. That generic print? Probably not going to recoup its costs when it gets donated or left on a curb after a move. And purchasing work from independent, up-and-coming artists is one of the surest ways to know that your initial investment will pay dividends if you decide to part with the piece down the road.

 

That said, not every purchase of original art is destined to break the bank. Fine art encompasses archival prints and limited editions, which also retain or accrue value, and enter the market at a more accessible price point. (Need a refresher on art vocab?
