The Piece That Pulls It All Together

Interior designer Emily Harmatz of Emily Harmatz Design Studio is known for creating spaces that feel layered, personal, and effortlessly elevated. Her work balances timeless design with unexpected moments, often using artwork as the soul of a space to bring in emotion and individuality. We caught up with Emily to talk about her recent studio evolution, her approach to design, and how Hapi Art helps bring her clients’ homes to life in a way that feels truly personal.

Q: Tell us a little about yourself and your interior design company, Emily Harmatz Design Studio!

A: I’m an interior designer focused on creating spaces that feel both elevated and deeply personal. At Emily Harmatz Design Studio we blend timeless design with fresh, unexpected elements to make homes that truly reflect how our clients live.

Q: We saw your recent transition from Just the Right Piece to Emily Harmatz Design Studio, what inspired the change?

A: The transition felt like a natural evolution as my work and vision grew. Rebranding under my own name allowed me to better reflect a more comprehensive, full-service design approach.

    Designer's Take on Scale:

Emily went with a 36"×60" print—one of our most popular sizes for a medium sofa. For larger sofas, we often suggest 35"×72".

Q: We love how you’ve incorporated Hapi Art into your projects. What is it about these pieces that you’re drawn to?

A: I’m drawn to the energy and personality in Hapi Art. The pieces instantly bring a space to life. They strike a great balance between playful and sophisticated, which works beautifully in a variety of interiors.

Q: In your opinion, how important is art when bringing a space together? And where do you love introducing unexpected color?

A: Art is often the soul of a space. It adds emotion, depth, and a sense of individuality. I love using it as a moment to introduce unexpected color, especially in otherwise neutral or restrained rooms.

Q: Do you ever design a space around a piece of art or do you typically layer it in at the end?

A: It really depends on the project, but often a strong piece of art can set the tone for everything else. Other times, it’s the final layer that pulls the entire room together.

Q: How do you think about scale when selecting artwork for a space?

A: Scale is everything! Art should feel intentional and proportionate to the space it’s in. I always consider the surrounding architecture and furnishings to ensure it makes an impact without overwhelming the room.

Q: Your projects span a range of styles. How do you incorporate bold, colorful pieces into different types of interiors?

A: Bold pieces can work in almost any style when they’re thoroughly integrated. I like to balance them with more neutral elements so they feel curated rather than overpowering.

Q: What kind of reactions do you get from clients when they see the artwork installed?

A: It’s often the moment everything clicks for them. Clients are usually excited because the artwork brings personality and completes the space in a way they didn’t fully envision before.

Q: Do you have a favorite Hapi Art piece or project you’ve used it in?

A: It’s hard to choose just one because I love using Hapi pieces in spaces where they can really stand out, like a dining room or entry, where they immediately set the tone. If I had to choose, however, one favorite is a multicolored, round acrylic piece I used in a large entry. Because the area was oversized, the piece became a focal point, created a wonderful design moment, and gave the space an anchor.

Q: It can be hard to capture the full magic of artwork online, how do the pieces feel in person compared to seeing them digitally?

A: In person, the texture, scale, and color depth are so much more impactful. There’s an energy to the pieces that’s difficult to fully translate through a screen.

Q: Any advice for someone selecting art for their home?

A: Choose pieces that you connect with emotionally rather than trying to match everything perfectly. The best spaces feel collected, not overly curated.
